Sodium Percarbonate
Sodium percarbonate - also known as oxygen bleach, is 100% active ingredient and is a very powerful disinfectant, odour neutraliser and cleaner. It is often a component of store bought soakers - but they will often have other ingredients in them, which are not always necessary and not always as safe.
Sodium percarbonate is sodium carbonate combined with hydrogen peroxide and when mixed with water it is a very effective cleaner for all types of surfaces and clothes. It is a safe alternative to bleach and soakers. It whitens whites, brightens colours, removes stains, odours and mould! It is also fragrance free - YAY.
Sodium percarbonate is not a chlorine bleach which is very poisonous (dioxin and chloroform are by-products) and it can create highly toxic chlorine gas if mixed with ammonia. Chlorine bleach uses an oxidizer to break chemical bonds and release the stain-causing substance. In traditional chlorine bleach, a highly toxic substance called sodium hypochlorite is used as the oxidizer. Instead, Sodium Percarbonate is an environmentally friendly version, that does not weaken fabrics like traditional bleach.
Sodium percarbonate solutions are most effective when mixed and used in very hot to boiling water. You can do a pre soak of your clothes by adding 1-4 tablespoons of Sodium Percarbonate to every 4 litres of hot water and allow clothes to soak for a few hours or overnight. Then wash as normal. If using cold water, soak for longer.
You can also add 2-3 tablespoons to the powder section of your washing machine with your normal detergent or dissolve 2-3 tablespoons in hot water and add to your washing machine, withyour normal detergent. Sodium Percarbonate will give you the added benefit of helping to clean and deodorise your machine!
If you want to do a deeper clean of your tea towels and dish cloths, add 1 tablespoon of Sodium Percarbonate to a large pot of simmering water. (Sodium Percarbonate will expand, so be careful when adding and make sure you have allowed extra room in your pot) Add your tea towels and cloths, ensuring you have enough water to cover them. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, stiring occasionally. Turn off the stove and remove cloths carefully once cooled slightly and add to your normal wash cycle.
The dirty water can be poured down the sink safely as it will also help to clean the pipes! Sodium percarbonate gradually decomposes into non-toxic, environmentally safe, food grade elements. It decomposes into oxygen, sodium carbonate (washing soda) and water.
Sodium Percarbonate is a must have addition to every home. It is a safe alternative to chemical bleaches and will give you great results!
