House plants have gained in popularity over the last few years. Many people are adding them to their home because of how beautiful they look and how they can transform the feel of a home. There are great benefits to having plants in the home apart from the look and feel they bring. Some plants can actually help by improving the air quality in the home and removing toxins.
One plant that you may want to consider is the Sansevieria - commonly known as "snake plant" but don't let that turn you off. It is an ideal plant for indoor spaces because it is such a great air purifier PLUS they need minimal care, not a lot of sunlight and are very hard to kill... (however some have been successful). They are perfect for a novice plant lover!
Studies, including those performed by NASA, have consistently shown the snake plant removes toxins such as formaldehyde, xylene, toluene, and nitrogen oxides. NASA, whose study purposed to determine how to clean the air in space stations, recommends at least 15 to 18 medium-to-large size plants for a 550-square-metre home. Yay - off to add more plants!
The plant purifies air by absorbing toxins through the leaves and producing pure oxygen. The Sansevieria is one of the best plants to add to your bedroom. Most other plants release carbon dioxide at night (in the absence of photosynthesis), the Sansevieria continues to produce oxygen.
A Sansevieria will do best in a sunny spot but even a room with little sunlight is suitable. Be careful not to over water them and allow the soil to dry out between watering. They are really tough plants but two things will kill them: too much water or no water at all. They actually thrive as hydro plants - growing just in water. We have a number of them in soil and hydro throughout our home.
Do you have a Sansevieria or 2 in your home and did you add them because you knew about their ability to remove toxins?
